How is the construction business in Vegas?
Harley Girl asked:
We are planning on moving to Vegas this summer. My husband is a licensed General Contractor here where we live. However, he doesn't think he is going to get his contractors license in Nevada. At least not right away til he gets a feel for the industry there first. In the meantime, he would want to work for someone else. He is an excellent contractor with over 25+ years in the industry, but, he wants to get away from framing and go into more finish work, cabinet construction and install, remodeling, decks, patios, add ons, etc. Is there a market for these skills without a license. And what kind of pay could he realistically expect with these skills and years of experience?
Are there plenty of good paying jobs around? Or is the money mostly in being a licensed person in this trade. Right now he is earning only around $25K – $30K. He wants to make more money without the hassles of licensing. Is this possible?

I guess you want the truth, which is good and bad.
The good. Las Vegas is one of the two fastest growing communities (along with Phoenix) in the United States. Construction is booming, and homes can't be built fast enough.
The bad. Until your husband gets his contractors license, and perhaps starts his own business he will find that here in the southwest most construction worker jobs have been taken over by Hispanics. If he does find a job most of his co-workers will be speaking Spanish. This is NOT a ****** comment, it's just the way things are in the southwest.

I left Vegas abit over a year ago, I spent 3 years there, there is ALOT of construction there, However, the cost of living is astronomical, rent, housing cost, gas, Crime is terrible, about any crime that happens there is more than likely related to the rising use of meth, I had my truck broke into 3 different times,, I Lost EVERYTHING I had in a storage unit, I had a job I had to drive my own vehicle all over town at all hours, I started carrying a baseball bat with me, If you have something and somebody else wants it bad enough, it seems they will find a way to get it, remember that town never sleeps and neither does the crime problems, so much of the town is aimed towards adults, if you have kids they see billboards all over town about Gentlemens Clubs or So and So's Escort Service Your husband may make alot more money there, but you may really want to weigh the pros and cons about life there, and one of the biggest issues I had there TRAFFIC, OMG the traffic ***** like you cannot believe, you can sit on an off ramp off the freeway for sometimes 10 minutes which doesnt sound like much, but all the traffic thats in front of you there, most of it or more will continue until you get where your going, check into the crime stats, the housing cost, and anything else pertaining to a life there, oh and I had roommates we rented a 3 BR 2 car garage,2 1/2 bath $1250.00 a month, If this helps any while online the Vegas paper is, knowing what I do now about Vegas I wouldnt move there, just do your homework before you commit, good luck
