How to build a house very economical way and cost saving of the construction cost?

I have plot in Vellachery, in Chennai to reduce the constuction cost, what are ways of cost saving in the construction line.I am not civil engineer.If on sq.feet rate, what is the rate going in Vellachery area.
If any anybody give me good suggestion on this recession period.
